Scar Revision in Seattle, WA

I was very pleased to have their office accommodate me since I was a new patient and got to see the doctor that week once I had my referral. Staff is awesome. Dr. Wu gave me the correct cream to heal my eczema and within two days my skin was back to normal. I would recommend this office to anyone who has skin issues. – JULIE B. M.

Surgeries, injuries and some skin conditions, including acne, can leave unsightly, and sometimes, painful scars that can be embarrassing, as well as emotionally and physically traumatic. At North Sound Dermatology, we have advanced technologies and the expertise needed to treat various types of scars for residents in Seattle, Everett, and the surrounding areas.

What are Common Scar Revision Treatments?

Every scar is different, so we take a highly individualized approach to treatment. In most cases, we can achieve either complete removal or significant improvement. Some of the most common techniques we use include:

  • Fractional laser skin resurfacing– Ablative and non-ablative lasers can improve many types of scarring, as well as wrinkles, fine lines, and other cosmetic concerns.
  • Surgical revision– Large scars from traumatic injuries or surgeries often cannot be entirely eliminated with lasers, so sometimes we need to remove the scar surgically. A precise incision is made around the scar, and the subsequent wound is closed with specific techniques and sutures, so that it can heal with minimal scarring.
  • Dermal fillers– Depressed scars, particularly on the face, may be “filled in” with a temporary or permanent dermal filler.
  • Dermabrasion– This procedure blends the scar into the surrounding normal skin so that it is not so obvious. It can improve the appearance of some minor scars.

What Treatments are Available for Acne Scars?

Several procedures, including laser skin resurfacing (as described above), chemical peels and dermal fillers may be used. The treatment recommended will depend on the number and type of acne scars that you have.

Can my Scar be Removed Completely?

That will depend on the cause of the scar, as well as the size and location of the scar. Some minor or superficial scars may be completely eliminated using the methods described above, whilst others can only be improved. In most cases, we are able to achieve at least a significant improvement.

Do Over-the-Counter Scar Creams Work?

Medical studies have consistently shown that there is no topical cream that can prevent or treat scars. However, the massaging action of rubbing a cream into a scar does help to improve the appearance of existing scars. However, it does not matter whether it is a very expensive cream, or just a bland daily moisturizer that you are using. The results are the same, no matter what cream you use. It is advisable to talk to your dermatologist before beginning any topical skin treatment as many of these can cause allergic skin reactions.

How Can Laser Therapy Improve Scars?

Laser skin resurfacing flattens, softens and smoothens scars, as well as improves the color of scars.
