Melasma Treatment in Seattle, WA

I was very pleased to have their office accommodate me since I was a new patient and got to see the doctor that week once I had my referral. Staff is awesome. Dr. Wu gave me the correct cream to heal my eczema and within two days my skin was back to normal. I would recommend this office to anyone who has skin issues. – JULIE B. M.

What is Melasma?

Melasma is a pigmentation disorder that is primarily a result of hormonal changes or heredity. It is identified by brown or tan patches that typically appear on the face, although it occasionally develops on the neck and forearms.

Who is at Risk for Melasma?

Although anyone can develop the condition, melasma is most commonly found in women. It has been referred to as the “pregnancy mask” because it commonly develops during pregnancy. There is also a relationship with sun exposure, as those who live in warmer climates are at a higher risk of developing melasma. Additionally, melasma appears more frequently in those with darker skin, as the level of pigmentation is higher.

How is Melasma Treated?

Depending on how deep in the skin your melasma exists, different treatment methods may be used. Skin-lightening creams and products can be used to reduce the symptoms. Chemical peels and microdermabrasion are common treatment methods for melasma, as they both accelerate cell turnover, removing the discolored skin. Both of these procedures are specifically tailored to your skin type for maximum results.

When Will I See Results?

Patients typically see results immediately after treatment, and downtime is often not required. Topical products may deliver results at different rates. However, different patients may experience different results depending on the severity of their melasma.
