At North Sound Dermatology, we are dedicated to providing our patients with the very best care possible, which includes customizing a treatment plan to meet the unique needs of each patient.
In medical dermatology, the first step to finding an excellent treatment, is an accurate and detailed diagnosis. A visual examination of your skin by a board-certified dermatologist, along with simple in-office diagnostic tests, may be sufficient. However, in some cases, it is necessary to take a sample of skin, called a biopsy, and have the sample analyzed by a board-certified dermatopathologist in order to arrive at an accurate diagnosis.
A dermatopathologist is a physician who specializes in pathology of the skin, and diagnoses diseases of the skin, hair, and nails by microscopic evaluation of skin biopsies.
Dermatologists often seek the assistance of dermatopathologists in cases that are difficult to diagnose, especially when cancer is discovered or suspected. A skin biopsy, hair sample, or nail sample is typically sent to a laboratory for evaluation by these specialists. The report provided by the dermatopathologist usually includes a definitive diagnosis, and additional information that can assist the dermatologist in devising a treatment plan. The level of detail and accuracy of this analysis are vital to the success of treatment.
To become board-certified as a dermatopathologist, a physician must complete a dermatology or pathology residency, followed by fellowship training in dermatopathology. Many dermatopathologists are general pathologists (not dermatologists) who have completed additional requirements to earn certification in this specialty. However, a few are board-certified dermatologists who have undergone pathology training and completed the requirements to earn board certification as dermatopathologists.
Dr. Mireille Chae, of North Sound Dermatology, is one of the few board-certified dermatologists who are also board-certified in dermatopathology. This dual board certification gives her many advantages over dermatopathologists who lack dermatology-specific expertise.
Dr. Chae is a Fellow of the American Society of Dermatopathology, as well as the American Academy of Dermatology. We are proud to be able to offer our patients this elevated level of diagnostics.
